Sony has launched a module supporting its proprietary ELTRES wireless communications technology for IoT.
ELTRES, which operates in the 900MHz band is claimed to have a range of up to 100kms, and able to support communication from a fast moving vehicle. It supports uplink-only communications at a rate of 80bps, delivering a 128 bit payload at a maximum rate of one per minute. It has been standardised as ETSI TS 103 357.
Sony says its new ELTRES module, the CXM1501GR supports ELTRES in the 920MHz band, includes impedance matching with an external antenna and a global navigation satellite receiver LSI to obtain time and position information” and high-frequency components such as the SAW filter required for the GNSS receiver.
Sony is positioning the device for “application in a broad range of IoT devices, aiming to develop various services making the most of stable wireless communications over long distances and while moving at high speeds, thereby creating a new market.”
First ELTRES network
Sony, Orix and NEC announced in October 2018 plans to establish a joint venture to operate an ELTRES network in Japan with Sony operating the network and Orix and NEC selling and supporting the service.
