Tasmanian energy distribution utility, TasNetworks, its telco subsidiary, 42-24, and NNNCo have partnered to build a Tasmania-wide LoRaWAN IoT network.
NNNCo will begin building the network in the second half of 2020, deploying LoRaWAN gateways on TasNetwork assets across Tasmania.
TasNetworks will explore opportunities to use the network to connect IoT devices for its own use cases such as grid safety, street lighting, and digital metering.
42-24 will be tasked with selling connectivity to third parties such as local councils, enterprise, agriculture and other utilities for their own IoT applications.
Tasmania’s second LoRaWAN network
However Tasmania already has what is claimed to be a “Tasmania-wide Enterprise-Grade LoRaWAN.” It is owned and operated by local company Definium Technologies, which manufactures its own LoRaWAN gateways.
IoTAustralia reported in May 2019 that Definium was planning to build the network after building one in Launceston.
Tasmanian newspaper The Examiner had reported Definium saying it planned to have 50 LoRaWAN base stations installed by July 2019 and 100 by year end, giving it coverage of 90 percent of the population. We were not able to immediately get an update on the status of the company’s network.
