The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) has published a white paper on digital transformation for IIoT, and the role innovation processes play in it.
The white paper also covers the disruptive technologies that transform the way companies operate, service and maintain equipment.
The IIC says the paper targets business managers involved in setting the digital transformation strategy and journey for an organisation, technology managers who need to identify and assess how technologies can be leveraged to facilitate the DX journey, and security and safety managers responsible for implementing protection and mitigation strategies to minimise the impact of disruptions, attacks, errors and faults along the journey.
Co-chair of the IIC Digital Transformation Working Group, Jim Morrish, founding partner of Transforma Insights, said the publication described the key technologies underpinning digital transformation and the first steps for any enterprise looking to deploy them.
The white paper., Digital Transformation – The Next Disruptive Wave Across Industries, identifies three categories of digital transformation initiatives.
New business models – entails an enterprise transforming to offer a substantially changed service to technology users, often associated with new ways of charging for services;
Enterprise operations – focuses primarily on increasing the efficiency (or reducing the cost, or risk) of providing products and services to technology users;
Customer experience – focuses on changing the customer experience in absence of other changes. “These projects tend to center on generating new service revenues or providing new services to customers, particularly field services.”
Digital transformation and sustainability
Publication of the white paper comes a month after a joint publication with The IoT Alliance Australia (IoTAA) on how digital transformation and IoT can contribute to the UN sustainable development goals.
IIC expands its ambit
The IIC claims to be “transforming business and society by accelerating the Industrial Internet of Things,” but says IoT has expanded since its foundation and there is now growing realisation that IoT is only one of several sets of technologies driving the transformation of business, industry, and society.
Accordingly, the IIC says it has “widened its focus to include this broader set of technologies and how they empower this digital transformation in industry.”
It notes that digital transformation in industry differs from digital transformation for consumers and wider business in that is the convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT).
“In digital transformation in industry, the innovative use of sensor-driven data and data-driven actuators affect people, business, operation, and the physical environment and empower the creation of better business outcomes.”
